How To Talk to Your Kids About Consent & Boundaries with Sex Educator Kathleen Hema

If you've ever wondered when to have "the talk," how to answer difficult questions about sex and relationships, or how to prepare your child for a world where pornography, social media, and AI are only a click away, this episode is for you.

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah sits down with sex educator and content creator Kathleen Hema for an honest conversation about one of the most intimidating parts of parenting: talking to our kids about sex, consent, body safety, relationships, and growing up in a digital world.

Drawing on years of experience teaching sex education and helping parents navigate these conversations, Kathleen explains why waiting for the "perfect moment" often means missing valuable opportunities to become your child's most trusted source of information.

    Together, they explore:

    • Why so many parents feel unprepared to talk about sex and how to build confidence before the conversation begins

    • What age-appropriate sex education actually looks like

    • Why children are often exposed to sexual topics earlier than parents realize

    • How the internet, social media, and algorithms have changed childhood

    • Why proactive conversations matter more than reactive ones

    • How to talk about pornography before a child encounters it online

    • What parents should do if they discover their child has viewed explicit content

    • The role shame can play in shutting down communication

    • How family values and beliefs can guide conversations about sex and relationships

    • Why consent starts long before discussions about dating and intimacy

    • How body autonomy and body safety create the foundation for future consent conversations

    • The growing influence of AI companions and chatbots on young people

    • Why many teens are approaching relationships, intimacy, and vulnerability differently than previous generations

    • How to talk to children about predators and online safety without creating fear

    • The importance of building trust so children feel comfortable coming to parents with difficult questions

Throughout the conversation, Kathleen reminds parents that they haven't "missed the boat." Whether your child is four or fourteen, it's never too late to begin building the trust, communication, and confidence that help kids navigate relationships, online influences, and growing up safely.

Because when it comes to raising kids in a digital world, the goal isn't having one perfect conversation, it's creating a relationship where the conversations never stop.

Digital Literacy in an AI World with Jeremy Carrasco

If you’ve ever looked at your feed and thought “Something feels… off” this episode is for you.

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah sits down with media producer and AI analyst Jeremy Carrasco to unpack the rapidly growing presence of AI-generated content online and why so many parents feel overwhelmed trying to navigate it.

From deepfakes and AI influencers to disturbing algorithmic pipelines and AI chatbots designed to simulate emotional connection, Jeremy explains how artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping the internet our kids are growing up inside of.

    Together, Sarah and Jeremy discuss:

    • why AI content exploded seemingly overnight

    • what “AI slop” actually is

    • how recommendation algorithms can push users toward increasingly disturbing content

    • why children may be seeing MORE AI content than adults

    • the growing concern around AI chatbots and kids

    • how AI-generated content blurs reality online

    • why repost culture and engagement algorithms are making misinformation worse

    • whether social media bans or regulations can realistically solve these problems

    • the environmental and societal costs of AI

    • and why digital literacy matters now more than ever

Jeremy also shares details from one of his most unsettling investigations involving sexualized AI-generated child content and the “algorithmic pipelines” that can quietly connect seemingly harmless content to darker corners of the internet.

But underneath all of this is a bigger question: What happens when an entire generation grows up online while even adults can no longer reliably tell what’s real?

This conversation is nuanced, unsettling, honest and one every parent should hear.

Should We Ban Social Media for Kids? A Parent’s Honest Take

If you’ve ever wondered whether social media bans are actually the answer to keeping kids safe online, or if they just feel like the answer, this episode is for you.

In this solo episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah unpacks the growing global push to ban social media for kids and teens, and why, despite understanding the concern, she’s not convinced it’s the solution.

Drawing on emerging policy conversations, real-world examples like Australia’s under-16 ban, and what she’s seeing firsthand as a child safety advocate, Sarah breaks down the complexity of this issue and why a simple “ban” may not address the deeper problem.

    Together, we explore:

    ●      Why social media bans are gaining momentum worldwide

    ●      What early data from Australia suggests about whether bans actually work

    ●      Why kids aren’t leaving platforms- they’re learning to work around them

    ●      The privacy risks tied to age verification, biometric data, and digital ID systems

    ●      How bans could expand surveillance and impact everyone - not just kids

    ●      Why restricting access doesn’t fix addictive design or platform incentives

    ●      The loophole few are talking about: kids still being shared online by parents

    ●      Why digital literacy, critical thinking, and emotional resilience matter more than ever

Sarah also shares her current perspective on what might be more effective from delaying devices and empowering parents, to pushing for stronger platform accountability and meaningful online safety legislation.

This episode is a reminder that while the risks of social media are real, the solutions aren’t simple and if we focus only on restricting access, we may miss the opportunity to actually prepare our kids for the world they’re growing up in.

Because we can’t put the genie back in the bottle but we can raise kids who know how to navigate it.

Cyber Expert Fareedah Shaheed: Predators & Online Grooming

If you’ve ever wondered how to talk to your kids about online safety without scaring them or pushing them away, this episode is for you.

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah sits down with Fareedah Shaheed (CyberFareedah), a cybersecurity expert, educator, and survivor of online grooming, to unpack what’s actually happening behind the screens our kids use every day.

Drawing from her lived experience and professional background, Fareedah breaks down how online predators operate today, where they show up, how they build trust, and why the way we’ve traditionally taught kids about “strangers online” is no longer effective.

    Together, they explore:

    • The real mechanics of grooming (and why it often feels “normal” to kids)

    • The subtle red flags parents are most likely to miss

    • Why connection- not control- is the strongest form of protection

    • How disconnection and vulnerability make children more susceptible

    • The critical shift from reactive parenting to proactive, relationship-based safety

Fareedah also introduces her SAFE Method, a framework built on Safe Spaces, Accountability, Fun, and Empathy - offering parents a practical, human-first approach to protecting kids online that goes far beyond apps, settings, or screen time limits.

This episode is a powerful reminder that while technology is constantly evolving, the most effective tool we have to keep our kids safe hasn’t changed: our relationship with them.

Screen Time, Social Media & Kids with Cat & Nat

Parenting has changed - and there’s no universal guidebook for raising kids in a world of smartphones, social media, and constant connectivity.

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, I sit down with Cat & Nat; the creators of The Common Parent and the Screen Sense Guide. We talk about what modern parenting actually looks like when your kids are growing up online.

Because here’s the reality: their kids have phones. And instead of pushing for complete abstinence, their approach is rooted in delay, intentional introduction, and ongoing management - meeting families where they are, without telling parents there’s only one “right” way to do this.

From screen time battles to social media pressure, we unpack how technology is shaping our kids and what we can actually do about it.

We get into the evolution of platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and even Pinterest and why some may be impacting kids in ways parents aren’t fully seeing.

This is a candid, practical conversation about:

    • Setting realistic screen time boundaries (that actually stick)

    • Teaching digital literacy and critical thinking

    • Navigating influencer culture and kids’ online identities

    • Balancing privacy, independence, and safety

    • Using tools like the Screen Sense Guide to better support kids online

We also talk about the pressure parents feel to “get it right” and why connection, communication, and consistency matter more than perfection.

If you’ve ever wondered how to raise grounded, resilient kids in a digital world without extremes, this episode is for you.

Tradwife Influencers: The Performance of Motherhood (And Why It’s Hurting Women)

This Episode is brought to you by presenting partner, Proton.

Your kids deserve privacy before the internet decides otherwise. Give them a clean digital start by reserving a Proton Mail email for them by going to proton.me/momuncharted and share this with a friend who needs to hear it. Every child is Born Private, and it should stay that way.

What are we really being sold when we scroll?

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah sits down with journalist, author, and Under the Influence podcast host Jo Piazza to unpack the rise of tradwife culture, influencer marketing, and the curated version of motherhood flooding social media.

Together, they explore how online content blurs the line between reality and performance- where “authentic” motherhood is often a highly produced brand designed to sell products, lifestyles, and ideologies.

From Ballerina Farm to Nara Smith, this conversation dives into:

    • The business behind the tradwife aesthetic

    • Why influencers “strip the labor” out of motherhood

    • The rise of “de-influencing” (that’s still influencing)

    • How social media shapes young girls’ views of femininity, work, and identity

    • The growing need for media literacy- for both parents and kids

Jo also shares why this content can be especially harmful for the next generation- and how parents can start having more honest, informed conversations at home.

This is a powerful, eye-opening episode about the pressure, performance, and profit behind modern motherhood online- and what it means for the future of our kids.

Note: Since recording this episode, I’ve learned that the term “Mormon” is considered outdated and can be offensive to some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I used this term during the conversation, and I’m sharing this note as a commitment to being more informed and respectful in my language moving forward.

The Secure Dad: Protecting Children’s Privacy Online

This Episode is brought to you by presenting partner, Proton.

This episode is sponsored by Proton Mail and their Born Private Campaign, which allows parents to reserve a private email address for their child before they’re even online- offering a way to give children a more protected digital starting point, before tracking and profiling begin.

Your kids deserve privacy before the internet decides otherwise. Give them a clean digital start by reserving a Proton Mail email for just $1 at proton.me/momuncharted and share this with a friend who needs to hear it.

Every child is Born Private, and it should stay that way.

What does it actually mean to keep our children safe in a digital world- and are we doing enough to protect their right to privacy?

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah sits down with Andy Murphy, also known as The Secure Dad, to break down the realities of raising kids in an increasingly connected world. Together, they explore how children are building digital identities earlier than ever before- often without their knowledge or consent- and why that matters more than many parents realize.

From online footprints and data collection to the hidden risks within Big Tech ecosystems, this conversation unpacks how children’s information is tracked, stored, and potentially used over time. Andy helps decode the terms parents hear every day- including VPNs, digital IDs, and data brokers- and explains what they actually mean for families trying to protect their children online.

At the heart of this discussion is a bigger question: do children have a right to privacy from the very beginning - and what does it look like to honor that in a digital-first world?

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the pace of technology or unsure how to safeguard your child’s digital life, this episode offers both clarity and practical steps to help you take back control.

Therapist Tessa Stuckey: Mental Health, Screens & Our Sons

What are therapists seeing behind closed doors when it comes to boys, screens, and the internet?

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah sits down with licensed therapist, parenting coach, and founder of Project LookUp, Tessa Stuckey, to talk about the growing impact of digital culture on young people’s mental health.

Drawing from years of working directly with teens and families, Tessa shares what she began noticing in her therapy practice long before the conversation went mainstream: rising anxiety, depression, and emotional struggles often connected to excessive screen use and the pressures of life online.

Together, Sarah and Tessa explore the real influence of social media, AI, and digital culture on child development- including the growing concerns around boys, online pornography, and how algorithm-driven platforms are shaping behavior, expectations, and identity.

They also discuss how parents can begin setting healthier digital boundaries at home, have honest conversations about difficult online topics, and help their children build resilience, confidence, and real-world social skills in a screen-saturated world.

Dr. Carrie Mackensen: The Hidden Impact of Smartphones on Parent-Child Connection

How do phones and constant digital distractions affect our relationships with our kids?

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah Adams sits down with Dr. Carrie Mackensen to explore technoference- the interruptions in parent-child interactions caused by smartphones, notifications, and screen use. While these moments can seem small, research shows they may influence children’s emotional development, attachment, and sense of connection with caregivers.

Dr. Carrie explains the science behind attention and bonding, including insights from the Still Face Experiment, a well-known study showing how quickly children respond when a caregiver becomes emotionally unavailable. The findings offer a powerful lens for understanding how everyday device distractions can impact developing relationships.

We also talk about the pressure many parents feel around screen time and parenting, why guilt isn’t helpful, and practical ways families can create healthier technology habits at home. Finally, we discuss the growing presence of AI in children’s lives and why ongoing conversations about technology between parents and kids are more important than ever.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • What technoference is and how phones interrupt parent-child interaction
    • The impact of screen time and digital distraction on child development
    • What the Still Face Experiment reveals about attachment and presence
    • How parents can reduce device interruptions without shame or guilt
    • Why intentional technology habits matter as AI and digital tools become part of childhood

If you’re navigating parenting in the digital age, this episode offers research-backed insight and practical strategies to help you stay connected with your kids in a screen-saturated world.

Sharenting in 2026: Privacy, Consent, and Your Child’s Digital Footprint

In this solo episode, Sarah returns to one of the core pillars of Mom Uncharted, sharenting - the practice of sharing children’s lives online.

In 2026, the risks look very different than they did even five years ago. With AI image manipulation, facial recognition, data harvesting, and permanent digital footprints, posting your child online isn’t just about connection - it’s about long-term consequences.

Sarah breaks down the three core concerns:

    • Privacy- Children deserve a childhood that isn’t permanently searchable.
    • Informed Consent- Kids cannot meaningfully consent to a lifelong digital record.
    • Digital Safety- From exploitation to identity theft, once content is public, control is lost.

This episode isn’t about shame. It’s about awareness and the reminder that it’s never too late to change course.

Ben Gillenwater: Is Roblox Safe for Kids? What Parents Need to Know

In this episode, Ben Gillenwater, known online as the Family IT Guy, breaks down what Roblox actually is and why it presents unique risks for children. He explains the dangers of online chat, user-generated content, and how inappropriate material can still reach young users despite parental controls. Ben also examines Roblox’s business model, including its heavy reliance on in-game purchases, and why that incentive structure matters for families.

Together, Sarah and Ben explore the broader child safety concerns surrounding the platform, including ongoing legal scrutiny and the story of a former young player who began exposing predators within the game. They compare Roblox to Minecraft, highlighting key differences in design, safety systems, and parental oversight.

The conversation ultimately expands beyond one platform, raising critical questions about privacy, age verification technologies, and the growing pressure to trade biometric data for “safety.” At its core, this episode is a call for parents to stay informed, prioritize privacy, and take an active role in guiding their children through the digital world.

    More About Ben Gillenwater:

Ben Gillenwater is a 30-year cybersecurity expert and dad on a mission to help families navigate the digital world safely.

His journey began when I gave his young son an iPad with "kid-safe" apps. Despite his decades of tech experience, he was shocked to discover inappropriate content and saw how the device's addictive design affected his sleep and outdoor activity.

Through Family IT Guy Ben, Ben creates videos and articles that help parents and kids learn how to leverage the positive parts of the internet while avoiding the dangerous and risky parts. His approach bridges the knowledge gap between complex technology and practical family protection, making digital safety accessible to everyone.

Dr. Alison Yeung: The Smartphone Effect on Kids

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, host Sarah Adams sits down with Dr. Alison Yeung, widely known as The Smartphone Effect MD, to unpack one of modern parenting’s biggest challenges: the impact of smartphones and social media on children’s mental health.

Together, they cut through the noise of polarized tech debates and explore what the research actually shows. Dr. Yeung explains why children’s mental health is complex and multifactorial, why “screens aren’t the problem” is an oversimplification, and how excessive screen time can affect motivation, focus, and emotional regulation- especially for vulnerable groups like kids with ADHD.

This conversation offers practical, preventative guidance for parents and educators, emphasizing digital literacy, healthy boundaries, and the power of modeling balanced tech habits at home.

More About Dr. Alison Yeung, MD, CCFP:

Dr. Alison Yeung graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, followed by medical training at the University of Ottawa and a Family Medicine residency at Western University. She has practiced as a community family physician in Kitchener since 2014, caring for over 1,200 patients with dedication and compassion. Her clinical focus and passion lie in child and adolescent mental health.

As both a family physician and a mother of two, Dr. Yeung has witnessed firsthand how digital technology shapes the lives of young people—offering connection and creative expression, but also profound risks. Over the past decade, she has cared for youth navigating rising rates of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm, often accompanied by feelings of loneliness, disconnection, and loss of purpose.

Recognizing that these challenges are complex and multifactorial, Dr. Yeung has become particularly concerned with the growing role of social media and screen time in children’s daily lives. Today, tweens spend an average of 5–6 hours a day on digital entertainment, and teens 6–8 hours—time that displaces sleep, outdoor play, physical activity, and in-person connection.

Since 2023, Dr. Yeung has been speaking to parents, educators, policymakers, and healthcare professionals about the impact of screens and social media on child development and mental health. Her mission is to empower families with knowledge, inspire change, and advocate for a healthier digital future for children.

Fortesa Latifi: Kid Influencers on Social Media

In this episode of Parents Uncharted, Sarah is joined by journalist Fortesa Latifi to unpack the rapidly evolving- and increasingly controversial- world of kidfluencers and child influencers.

Together, they explore what it means for children to grow up online, from the rise of family vlogging and sharenting to the growing backlash against monetizing kids on social media. The conversation examines shifting parental attitudes, the cultural impact of documentaries like Bad Influence, and the emergence of content houses and influencer pipelines designed specifically for young creators.

Sarah and Fortesa also break down recent child influencer laws and financial protections, discussing what these regulations get right- and where they still fall short when it comes to safeguarding kids’ privacy, labor rights, and long-term well-being. They reflect on how public tragedies have changed the way audiences view child influencers, and the emotional toll that constant visibility and online scrutiny can place on families.

The episode goes on to explore the power dynamics between teen influencers, brands, and traditional celebrities, as well as the blurred line between autonomy and exploitation in the influencer economy. Finally, Sarah shares personal reflections on parenting in the digital age, the risks of building a child’s digital footprint too early, and the looming challenges AI and synthetic media may pose for kids’ safety and identity online.

This episode is a must-listen for parents, policymakers, educators, and anyone questioning where the line should be drawn when it comes to children, content, and consent in the age of social media.
